MELAKA, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- The Melaka Straits Mosque, located on Pulau Melaka, here is now temporarily closed to tourists until Dec 31 for maintenance and upgrading works.
State Education, Higher Education and Religious Affairs Exco Datuk Rahmad Mariman said however, the mosque is still open for the prayer and religious activities.
He said the state government had allocated RM2.8 million for the restoration and upgrading of the mosque and it would be reopened to visitors early next year.
"The maintenance and upgrading work covered the entire facade of the mosque as well as the compound, toilets and kiosks for the convenience of visitors and congregants using the facilities on the premises.
"The temporary closure of the mosque to visitors is to avoid the risk of injuries or accidents," he told reporters after inaugurating the 2022 Zakat award ceremony for the state's public and private sectors here last night.
He said the maintenance and upgrading work was being done in preparation for Visit Melaka Year 2024.
The Melaka Straits Mosque, also known as the Floating Mosque, built on Pulau Melaka, is one of the state's tourist landmarks which costs RM10 million.
