MELAKA, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- Local rice stalls took centre stage at the Rahmah Sale during the Jiwa MADANI Programme in Kampung Sungai Putat today, drawing the attention of the public.
Dara Ayu Daud, a 52-year-old cleaning sector worker from the village, eagerly attended the event, arriving as early as 9 am to purchase 10- kilogramme (kg) pack of local rice where its sale is limited to one bag per customer.
"I learned about the Rahmah Sale today through a WhatsApp group, so I came here early and had to wait in line to buy rice, along with eggs and other essentials like cooking oil, flour, sugar and vermicelli.
“The sale is something that we always look forward to especially to purchase rice, as the prices at supermarkets or regular stores are higher than what is offered in this programme," she told Bernama here today.
The Rahmah Sale offers 10-kg pack of local rice at RM26 per pack, a bundle of four essential items (cooking oil, vermicelli, sugar, and eggs) at RM10 and grade C eggs at RM10 per tray.
Nur Faizatul Mohd Fuzi, a 23-year-old resident of the same village, expressed her hope that the rice sales in such programmes would not be restricted to just one pack per visitor as the item is a basic necessity which is not sold at an affordable price in the market.
Living with a large family, Nur Faizatul said rice is a staple food in their household, as they frequently prepare home-cooked meals.
She commended the sale programme for its affordability and suggested expanding such initiatives to various locations, making it more accessible for people to purchase rice supplies at lower prices.
"For families like mine, daily cooking is a must. So, I come here specifically to buy rice and cooking oil packets," said the food stall operator.
Mariam Othman, a 63-year-old single mother of four, expressed gratitude for the Rahmah Sale programme as it significantly helps individuals like her reduce expenses, as the prices offered are much lower than those in supermarkets.
She eagerly anticipates and never misses the opportunity to attend the programme when organised near her home.
Earlier, Minister of Communications Fahmi Fadzil officially launched the Jiwa MADANI Programme, offering a range of services including the Central Database Hub System (PADU), Rahmah Sales and complimentary health screenings.
The services provided by various agencies affiliated with the Communications Ministry aim to address the needs of the community and contribute to their well-being.
