MAPA2024 APPROVES PROPOSED RM30 MLN ALLOCATION TO IMPLEMENT NEW BUSINESSES

PETALING JAYA, June 22 (Bernama) -- The 38th Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad’s (Angkasa) annual general meeting (MAPA 2024) today passed the proposed allocation of RM30 million, that will be used to implement new businesses to strengthen the cooperatives sector and the national economy.

Angkasa president Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Fattah Abdullah said it includes the cooperative business development projects and food security projects that encompasses crops, livestock and fisheries.

“The world today is facing climate change issues, we can see many countries that are supposed to be producing food being hit by drought, floods and even war that cause a disruption in food supply.

“So this becomes big obstacles and challenges that lead to the lack of food supply in our country and Angkasa along with other cooperatives have taken the initiative to look at this matter seriously so that we can get involved in these fields,” he told reporters at MAPA 2024 here today.

Other new businesses discussed at the meeting included the ‘Bean to Bar’ chocolate processing centre incubator project, the Beef Cattle Incubator Project Phase 1: Cattle Quarantine Centre, revolving credit facilities for project development and loans from Angkasa to MyAngkasa Holdings Sdn Bhd for the setting up of 10 new dialysis centres.

Abdul Fattah had stressed in his speech earlier about the importance of cooperatives as the catalyst for inclusive and sustainable development of the national economy.

On the National Cooperatives Congress that will be held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on July 25, he said it would focus on efforts to empower laws and policies related to cooperatives as well as to draft the 100-year roadmap of the country’s cooperatives.

The congress, which was last held in 1969, will also touch on the sustainable cooperatives agenda as the sector contributes significantly to the national economy with a recorded revenue of RM64.6 billion as of December 2023, he said.

Over 5,000 cooperatives throughout the country will take part in the two-day congress, which will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 26.
