Menara KL’s ‘Merdeka Gig In The Sky’ An Instant Hit, To Return Next Year

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 (Bernama) -- The inaugural 'Merdeka Gig in The Sky,' organised by Menara Kuala Lumpur as part of the National Day Eve celebrations, is set to become an annual event following overwhelming response from both local and international visitors.

Menara Kuala Lumpur chief executive officer Nazli Saad said there are plans to collaborate with the Tourism, Arts and Culture; and Communication ministries to ensure the event’s continued success in future National Day Eve celebrations.

“We believe this event has the potential to become a major attraction for National Day Eve celebrations in Kuala Lumpur, while simultaneously promoting Menara Kuala Lumpur as a national icon.

“Last night's celebration was unique as we are the only tower in Kuala Lumpur offering such an experience at 300 metres above ground level, providing a stunning nighttime view of the city and the festive atmosphere of the 2024 National Day Eve celebration,” he told Bernama.

The event was part of the 'Merdeka Madness' campaign, which kicked off on Aug 1 and runs until Sept 16 in conjunction with this year’s National Day celebrations.

Nazli said various activities have been organised, including the display of a massive Jalur Gemilang measuring 57 feet wide and 114 feet long on the antenna of the 383-metre tall tower, and the 'Colours of Malaysia Tower Lighting' featuring the flag colours of Malaysia's 14 states.

A National Day poetry recitation competition will also be held, he said.

Siti Ruqaiyah Hashim, 36, who attended the event with friends, shared her excitement about experiencing the National Day Eve celebration from such a high vantage point.

“In the past, I’ve celebrated National Day Eve at Dataran Merdeka, and that too, from a distance. This time, my friends and I opted for a view from above. The exclusivity and ambiance here are unlike anything else,” she said.

Videographer Lee Qin Le, 34, who attended with 20 friends, said they chose the high vantage point to capture photos and videos of the celebration, offering a fresh perspective compared to their usual spots at Dataran Merdeka and Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC).

“The atmosphere here isn't too crowded, which is a good thing. We had so much fun experimenting with new angles, and we’ll likely return next year," he said.
