NUTP Seeks Quota Of Permanent Member In NLAC

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- The National Union of the Teaching Profession  (NUTP) is requesting the government to establish a permanent member quota for the union in the National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC).

NUTP secretary-general Fouzi Singon said NLAC is a body established by the government to enable the Minister of Human Resources to obtain advice, views or agreement on matters related to labour and human resources in this country.

He said NUTP also supports the government's move to implement reforms in the public service as stated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on September 2 to ensure that the quality of public services can be improved and stay relevant to current needs.

"At the same time, NUTP hopes that the upcoming reforms will not reduce the existing benefits in the teaching profession, especially the time-based promotion path for teachers," he said in a statement.

In the meantime, Fouzi said NUTP was excited and thanked Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong for choosing NUTP in the schedule to meet with trade union leaders, recently.

He said the visit clearly showed the seriousness and commitment of the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) to raise the dignity of workers in Malaysia.

"This visit gives great hope to the union in uplifting and defending the plight of workers in this country," he said, adding that the visit was a catalyst for closer cooperation between the trade union and KESUMA.

Fouzi said NUTP will continue to support the idealism and direction of KESUMA and is ready to cooperate more closely to make the fight for welfare, skills and success a reality.

In addition, he informed that NUTP expressed its appreciation to the government for announcing a salary adjustment of 15 per cent to civil servants in the executive group as well as the management and professional group.

"This proves that the MADANI government is very concerned about the cost of living issues faced by civil servants," he said.
