KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) recently held its 24th convocation ceremony, where it proudly conferred degrees upon 1,367 graduates.

The convocation, which took place on Oct 27 and 28, honored 1,028 undergraduates, 242 of whom received their Master of Science degree and 97 graduates received their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), hence joining the university's growing alumni network of over 25,000 professionals worldwide.

In a statement today, UTP said that for nearly three decades, the university has been instrumental in delivering PETRONAS' education agenda, nurturing skilled professionals vital to Malaysia's progress.

“The university’s commitment to innovation, creativity, and holistic education equips graduates to become industry leaders and shape the future,” it said.

At the convocation, the Chancellor’s Gold Award was presented to Muhammad Nur Aiman Haja Maidin, a graduate in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, while Business Management graduate Raja Nur Shazatul Aisyah Raja Idris Shah and Computer Engineering graduate Ong Wei Ling received the Chancellor Silver Award and Chancellor Bronze Award, respectively.

“For postgraduate studies, M. Devendran Manogaran, a Chemical Engineering graduate, was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy for the Best Postgraduate Research Award, while Mochammad Faqih, also a Chemical Engineering graduate, received the Best Postgraduate Research Award for the Master’s category.

“Stacy Primus Liew was awarded the Best Student Award for Master Programme by Coursework,” it said, adding that the UTP Chancellor Tan Sri Dr Mohd Hassan Marican and Pro Chancellor Tan Sri Zaharah Ibrahim conferred the degrees to the graduates.

UTP Pro Chancellor Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Kamadjaja Aziz, PETRONAS Chairman Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh, UTP Board of Directors Chairman Farehana Hanapiah and UTP Board Members were also present at the ceremony.

UTP added that several events were held alongside its 24th convocation celebration, including a celebration by Yayasan PETRONAS, in collaboration with UTP, to mark the completion of the Warisan Hijau Trail within the university campus.

“This initiative, implemented by the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), involved comprehensive baseline studies and meticulous development of the 950-meter trail, located in one of the few remaining freshwater swamp forests in the Perak Tengah district.

“The trail features an eco-friendly boardwalk and informative boards, showcasing the rich biodiversity of the area, including over 300 species of flora, fauna, and insects. This project underscores the importance of environmental conservation and aims to foster awareness, knowledge, and commitment among UTP students, staff, and the broader community,” it said.

Furthermore, UTP and PETRONAS Group Technical Solutions (GTS) have jointly launched Malaysia's first private 5G campus network, a significant milestone in the integration of advanced technology into industrial applications.

“This cutting-edge infrastructure will facilitate groundbreaking projects in remote operation, control, automation, and robotics. The 5G private antenna installed at UTP will accelerate digital transformation and enable faster, more secure connectivity for businesses and industries.

“The PETRONAS-UTP 5G Innovation Laboratory (PER5ONA) will serve as a live testbed for 5G applications in the oil and gas sector, driving innovation and accelerating the pace of technological advancements,” the statement added.

Additionally, in conjunction with the PETRONAS 50th celebration, a commemorative torch was presented to Mohd Hassan to mark the arrival of the torch’s final destination at UTP.
