KUCHING, 13 Nov (Bernama) -- Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) and Worldview Climate Solutions (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd today signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to embark on a blue carbon initiative in the Tanjung Manis mangrove area.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan witnessed the signing ceremony.
STIDC was represented by its general manager Zainal Abidin Abdullah while Worldview Climate Solutions (Malaysia) was represented by its managing director Datuk Selva Kumar.
After the ceremony, Awang Tengah said that he hoped the project, the first of its kind, would yield positive results.
According to statement from STIDC, the project aims to restore and conserve 10,000 hectares of mangrove forests, develop a blue carbon ecosystem, capture carbon from the restored mangroves as well as support local biodiversity and ecotourism.
It said this partnership follows a series of feasibility studies conducted since 2023, confirming the suitability of Tanjung Manis as a sustainable blue carbon site.
“This initiative reflects STIDC’s dedication to conserving our natural resources for future generations while fostering economic development in the region.
“With the backing of the Sarawak government and our partners, we are confident this project will serve as a cornerstone for sustainable growth in the Tanjung Manis Economic Growth Area,” said Zainal Abidin in the same statement.
