KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- A three-day cultural showcase celebrating Malaysia’s Orang Asli and Orang Asal heritage will take place from Nov 22 to 24 at The Square, Publika, here.
Organised by Yayasan Kesenian Orang Asli & Asal (YKOA), the inaugural IRAMA ASLI & ASAL 2024 promises to blend the rich traditions of Malaysia’s indigenous peoples with unity and artistic innovation, introducing their unique cultures to an urban audience.
The event highlights the diversity of the Orang Asli, the indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia known for their forest traditions, and the Orang Asal of Sabah and Sarawak, renowned for their ceremonial dances, crafts, and music.
According to a statement from YKOA, the event aims to preserve and elevate indigenous heritage while fostering understanding and supporting the livelihoods of artisans and performers.
"This is not just an event; it is a platform to celebrate resilience, individuality, and shared cultural identity in a modern Malaysia," the statement added.
The official ceremony will begin at 11:30 AM on 23 Nov, with representation from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, reflecting its strong support for cultural preservation.
Dr. Andre Ratos, Chairman of YKOA, will deliver the keynote address, setting the stage for a celebration of unity and diversity.
The itineraries include bazaar attractions Running daily from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, culinary delights, interactive experiences, and craft demonstrations.
The program also features an electrifying lineup of traditional and modern performances, including Sarawak’s Melanau and Bamboo Dances, showcasing agility and rhythm, Sabah’s Sumazau Dance, a graceful harvest dance, and Peninsular Malaysia’s Senoi-Semai Performances, embodying harmony and connection to nature.
Live and Contemporary Indigenous Music by Anderson Kalang, blending ethnic Malaysian sounds with contemporary beats. Audience participation is encouraged with interactive dance sessions like the Joget, Poco-Poco, and Datun Julud.
Funds raised from the event will support YKOA’s medical outreach programs for indigenous communities, in line with its mission to champion cultural preservation, education, and healthcare since its establishment in 2002.
