PUTRAJAYA, Dec 18 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) has been urged to review the control mechanism for mixing local white rice with imported white rice, alongside conducting price simulations.
The recommendation was made by the Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) after examining findings from the Padi and Rice Industry Study in Malaysia during the second meeting of the National Food Security Policy Cabinet Committee (JKKMN) for 2024, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said his ministry was also requested to assess forms of assistance and support for padi farmers and the rice industry to mitigate the impact of rising production costs.
"These studies must be prepared comprehensively and presented to the Cabinet next month," he said in a statement today.
He added that this JKKMN meeting examined two working papers.
Meanwhile, Mohamad said the meeting also discussed a paper on the subsidy mechanism for eggs and its implications for the industry.
He said that an engagement session with industry players would be held to refine the implementation mechanism for egg subsidies.
According to Mohamad, the meeting also agreed that initiatives related to the padi, rice, and egg industries should be implemented promptly to ensure the sustainability of these industries and the consistent availability of food commodities.
"KPKM is committed to ensuring decisions made will strike a balance and not burden the people or the industry, in line with the core values of Malaysia MADANI, namely sustainability, prosperity, and compassion.
"The meeting calls on all parties to unite efforts in enhancing the country's food security to be more sustainable, resilient, and technologically advanced, driving economic growth and improving the people’s well-being," he said.
The JKKMN meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, ministers, deputy ministers, secretaries-general, and the Governor of Bank Negara.
