MELAKA, Oct 18 (Bernama) -- The state government has allocated RM200,000 for over 1,000 Indian families across all parliamentary constituencies in Melaka, to bring greater joy for this year’s Deepavali celebrations.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh explained that the contribution is a symbol of unity and respect for the community, particularly for those in the B40 income bracket who are celebrating the Festival of Lights.
The Chief Minister's Office has also distributed more than 400 food kits to Indian community welfare associations throughout the state to provide essential supplies to those in need during the festive period.
"On Oct 10, a total of 100 students from 21 Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil were also presented with new clothing.
“This evening, 30 anak Melaka children from B40 families in the Indian community have received clothing to help them celebrate a more joyous Deepavali.
"I hope that the contributions we have made will, to some extent, ease the burden for families of more limited means as they make their Deepavali preparations, and provide them with a ray of happiness," he told reporters here last night.
He was speaking after officiating the state-level Deepavali Festival 2025, which was also attended by Melaka MIC chairman and state executive councillor for Youth, Sports, and Non-Governmental Bodies, Datuk V P Shanmugam.
The vibrant festival drew a crowd of approximately 2,000 visitors from various ethnic communities, creating a lively atmosphere in anticipation of Deepavali, which will be observed on Monday, Oct 20.
Guests were treated to a variety of traditional Indian cuisine, such as tosai, vadai and putu mayam, as well as captivating performances of Indian art and culture.
