KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is ready to lead the 47th ASEAN Summit with principle and confidence while upholding regional centrality, strengthening free trade and security, and amplifying the voices of the Global South - including on the Gaza issue, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said Malaysia remains consistent in calling for justice, lasting peace and the preservation of human dignity in Gaza.
Anwar said this year’s Summit marks a new chapter, not only with the attendance of global leaders including United States President Donald Trump, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, but also as a symbol of ASEAN’s renewed spirit rooted in moderation, solidarity and shared prosperity.
“This Summit is also historic as ASEAN will officially welcome Timor-Leste as its 11th member, reflecting the region’s inclusivity and strengthening sense of kinship,” he said in a Facebook post today.
The Prime Minister said Malaysia also emphasised the importance of strengthening dialogue and understanding between Thailand and Cambodia in addressing emerging issues, in line with ASEAN’s spirit of peaceful diplomacy and unity.
“We also continue to support peace efforts in Myanmar through principled diplomacy and the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus for the well-being of its people.
“I’m confident that close cooperation between the government and media will enhance public understanding of Malaysia’s role as a nation that leads with wisdom, stands on firm principles and courageously advocates for global justice,” he said.
The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from Oct 26 to 28.
More than 30 heads of state and government are expected to convene in the federal capital to discuss regional peace, economic resilience and inclusive growth under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025, themed “Inclusivity and Sustainability”.
A total of 2,854 media personnel from 290 agencies have registered to cover the historic event, which will also mark the formal admission of Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s 11th member, symbolising Southeast Asia’s unity and continued expansion.
