Thirty Local Authorities Earn Malaysia Smart City Rating – KPKT

23/10/2025 02:50 PM

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- Thirty local authorities across the country have earned the Malaysia Smart City Rating 2025, reflecting continued progress in implementing smart city initiatives to realise the Smart Nation vision by 2040.

Housing and Local Government (KPKT) Deputy Minister Datuk Hajah Aiman Athirah Sabu said the recognition was based on smart city indicators under the Malaysia Standard ISO 37122:2019, used to assess the performance and level of smart city initiatives implementation.

“Of the total, 27 local authorities received a Level 1 rating (Smart City Early Adopter), two were recognised at Level 2 (Developing Smart City), while one achieved Level 3 (Leading Smart City), the first since the rating system was introduced,” she said in a statement.

She said the recognised local authorities will receive their awards from the KPKT Minister on Oct 28, in conjunction with the 2025 World Town Planning Day celebration in Putrajaya.

Since the Smart City Rating Programme began in 2023, 75 local authorities have been recognised, 70 at Level 1, four at Level 2, and one at Level 3.

“This achievement was supported by special grants to local authorities to implement smart city projects. It aligns with KPKT’s target under the 13MP to recognise 115 local authorities as Smart City Early Adopters by 2030,” she said.

Aiman Athirah added that starting this year, KPKT has introduced a new initiative, the Smart Township Rating, for private developers, with Silver, Gold and Platinum recognition categories.

“Fifteen Smart Township applications have been received from private developers, and five have been successfully rated, two at Silver level, two at Gold, and one achieving the highest Platinum rating,” she said.

She said KPKT’s continued efforts to expand smart city and smart township initiatives are driving Malaysia’s goal of becoming a Smart Nation by 2040, in line with the MADANI Government’s vision to strengthen governance, improve public well-being and promote urban sustainability.
