Floods In Kedah And Perak Improve As Evacuee Numbers Drop

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- The flood situation in Kedah and Perak has shown signs of improvement, with the number of evacuees in relief centres (PPS) dropping to 1,518 from 2,410 this morning.

In KEDAH, 915 people are still taking shelter in five PPS as of 5 pm, compared with 1,281 people from 372 families earlier today.

The Kedah State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) said that in Pendang, 411 people from 106 families were housed in the Tanah Merah Rakan Sukan Complex Hall and SK Ayer Puteh, while in Kota Setar, 228 people from 66 families were placed in SK Taman Aman.

Meanwhile, in Kulim, 151 evacuees from 59 families were housed in SK Merbau Pulas and the Pokok Sena Multipurpose Hall sheltered 125 people from 36 families. The PPS in Kubang Pasu, which opened last Saturday, was closed at 1 pm today.

According to the Public Infobanjir website, Sungai Pendang in Pendang and Sungai Padang Terap in Kubang Pasu have exceeded the danger level at 3.52 metres and 3.89 metres respectively, while Sungai Titi Kerbau in Pendang has surpassed the warning level at 6.03 metres.

In PERAK, the number of flood evacuees in four districts has decreased to 603 people from 183 families this evening, down from 1,129 people from 362 families this morning.

The Perak JPBN secretariat said that in the Larut, Matang and Selama (LMS) district, 27 people from seven families were still taking shelter at SK Matang, while 305 people from 89 families were housed at SK Sungai Batu, Sekolah Agama Rakyat Padang Serai, and SK Pantai Remis in Manjung.

In Perak Tengah, 110 people from 31 families remained in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Layang-Layang Kiri, Parit, while in Kerian, two PPS, namely the Gunung Semanggol Multipurpose Hall and SK Parit Haji Aman, accommodated 161 people from 56 families.

Four PPS have been closed, namely the Ali Rouse Ulu Sepetang Mosque and Surau Al-Hidayah Pondok Quint Batu 13 in LMS, and SK Beruas and SK Gangga in Manjung.
