Marine Life Rebound In Labuan Marine Park Boosts Dive Tourism Prospects

02/04/2026 03:11 PM

LABUAN, April 1 (Bernama) -- Waters surrounding the islands within the Labuan Marine Park have shown significant improvement in marine biodiversity, with increased sightings of turtles, nudibranchs, and a variety of colourful reef fish, according to the Labuan Dive Club.

Its president Teoh Ming Woei said the encouraging development was observed during the club’s routine dives around Rusukan Besar and Rusukan Kecil islands, which are among the key dive sites within the marine park.

He said divers had recently encountered more marine species, including sea turtles and nudibranchs, as well as healthier coral ecosystems that now support a wider range of marine organisms.

“The visibility and marine life presence have improved, and we are seeing more turtles like Hawksbill sea turtle), nudibranchs and vibrant fish species during our dives…this is a positive sign that the marine ecosystem is recovering well,” he told Bernama today.

Teoh said the improvement augurs well for Labuan’s dive tourism sector, as richer marine biodiversity would enhance the overall diving experience and attract more visitors to the island.

He also urged the relevant authorities to continue enforcing strict conservation and protection measures to safeguard the fragile marine ecosystem, particularly within the Labuan Marine Park.

“Continuous monitoring and protection are crucial to ensure these habitats remain undisturbed and sustainable for future generations,” he added.

Labuan Marine Park, which includes Pulau Kuraman, Rusukan Besar and Rusukan Kecil, is known for its rich marine biodiversity and serves as a popular destination for recreational diving activities.
