PUTRAJAYA, April 27 (Bernama) -- Rural libraries are being strengthened as holistic community centres and drivers for local socio-economic development through the 1 Village Library 1 Product (1PD1Produk) programme.
National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said each rural library is encouraged to showcase at least one unique, commercially viable product, service or community identity.
He said the initiative positions rural libraries as facilitators of rural economic development while retaining their core role as centres of knowledge and learning.
“Rural libraries must serve not only as spaces that bring communities together, but also as platforms for sustainable local economic growth,” he said in a statement today.
To date, 488 products have been identified nationwide and categorised by state for monitoring and promotion. These include traditional food, handicrafts, agricultural produce and experience-based services.
Aaron said food products make up the largest share with 296 items, followed by services (128), handicrafts (56) and agricultural products (eight), reflecting the strong potential of small and medium enterprises at the community level.
By state, Negeri Sembilan recorded the highest number with 60 products, followed by Kedah (59), Sabah (48) and Perak (44), indicating continued efforts to strengthen the role of rural libraries in community development.
He added that each product is selected based on local strengths and identity, with details systematically recorded, including product name, category, location and entrepreneur, to support promotion through community programmes, exhibitions, social media and strategic partnerships.
“Overall, the 1PD1Produk programme has increased the visibility of local products, supported small entrepreneurs and strengthened ties between rural libraries and communities. It also enhances local identity and adds value to community development.” he said.
The programme aims to highlight community identity, expand economic participation and reinforce the role of rural libraries as inclusive, high-impact community centres, while contributing to more sustainable and competitive rural development.
