KUALA TERENGGANU, May 12 (Bernama) -- Two sisters are feared drowned after they went missing while on an outing in Sungai Jeram Hulu, near here this afternoon.
Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Baharum Hasim said they received a report at 3.11 pm about the incident and a 12-man team, along with a water rescue team, was dispatched to the incident area for search and rescue operations.
"According to the report, there were four teenagers, aged 12 to 15, bathing and swimming in Sungai Jeram Hulu. Two of them, both 12, were rescued by members of the public and taken to the hospital, while another two are believed to be still missing,” he said when met at the scene of the incident today.
He added that the water rescue team was conducting a surface search but had yet to discover any signs.
An eyewitness, Wan Mohammad Naqiuddin Wan Muda, 33, said that one of the missing girls was bathing across the river when she showed signs of drowning, and her three friends entered the river to help, but encountered difficulty staying afloat themselves.
"I rushed to get a boat, while another villager swam out to reach the victims to take them to the bank.
"We found one of them about 100 metres from the location of the incdent after they were carried away by swift currents,” he added.
