Gov't Seeks Global Fuel Supply Sources Amid West Asia Conflict - MKN

TUMPAT, June 6 (Bernama) -- The government is expanding its search for fuel sources from various countries to ensure the nation’s energy supply remains stable amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, said National Security Council (MKN) director-general Datuk Raja Nurshirwan Zainal Abidin.

He said the initiative, driven by Petronas, is intended to secure adequate fuel supplies for the country despite disruptions in the global energy supply chain stemming from ongoing geopolitical tensions.

“From a fuel perspective, supplies are sufficient until the end of August, driven by Petronas, while efforts are under way to source fuel from around the world to ensure adequacy.

“Alhamdulillah, these efforts appear to be bearing fruit as hoped, and in terms of fuel supply, we are not expected to be significantly affected,” he told reporters after the National Cohesion Programme here today.

He said the public also has an important role in ensuring the long-term stability of fuel supplies by using energy responsibly and avoiding wastage.

He also called on the authorities to tighten efforts to combat fuel smuggling in border areas to prevent losses that could disrupt domestic supply.

Last month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was reported to have said that petrol and diesel supplies in the country remain sufficient, despite the conflict in West Asia and global economic conditions placing pressure on the global energy supply chain.

He said the government remains committed to maintaining the subsidised price of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said Malaysia’s good relations with several countries, including Iran, have helped ensure that the country’s oil supply route through the Strait of Hormuz has continued to run smoothly so far.
