HAWANA 2026 To Boost Penang Tourism And Creative Economy - Exco

18/06/2026 11:30 AM

GEORGE TOWN, June 18 (Bernama) -- The main National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2026 celebration in Penang is expected to spur economic growth and generate broad media exposure, strengthening the state's regional brand.

Penang's selection as the first-time host for HAWANA recognises its capability to hold international events and its appeal as a major tourism destination, said State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai.

He said the prestigious event offers a prime opportunity to showcase Penang's unique cultural heritage, diverse gastronomy, tourism products, and creative economy.

"The presence of media from across Malaysia and the ASEAN region will give Penang extensive, high-value exposure, further cementing its position as one of the country's top tourist destinations.

"This is also expected to bring direct and indirect economic benefits to the state, as the presence of thousands of visitors and media personnel will boost demand for hotels, food and beverages, transport, shopping malls, and local tourist attractions," he told Bernama today.

On readiness, Wong said tourism operators reported strong hotel bookings, adding Seberang Perai, the main venue, offers ample accommodation for the June 19-21 influx.

Wong said that the media is an essential partner for any state looking to market its tourism and drive growth in its creative sectors, noting that by providing accurate and effective information, the media helps market destinations, promote tourism products, and build confidence among visitors.

"In the creative economy, media highlight local talent, art, and innovation, boosting economic growth and Penang's identity.

"The state government values media as a partner driving tourism, the creative economy, and Penang's image at home and abroad," he said.

Wong said the event's impact will extend beyond media, boosting tourism and creative sectors.

The HAWANA 2026 main celebration, to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 20 at the PICCA Convention Centre @ Butterworth Arena here, is expected to bring together around 1,000 media practitioners from Malaysia and abroad.

The event, themed ‘Media Integrity Strengthens Credibility’, is organised by the Ministry of Communications and executed by Bernama to honour Malaysian journalists' dedication and professionalism.

Meanwhile, about 30,000 visitors are expected at the three-day RIUH Pi HAWANA Carnival starting tomorrow at the convention centre, which will host local brands and hands-on workshops for the public to explore creative activities.

The free-admission event will feature over 24 local creative brands and 20 food vendors, and 16 live stage performances from local artistes such as Exists, Bunkface, Masdo, Sakura Band, Budak Nakal Hujung Simpang, and Chelsea Ng.
