ALOR GAJAH, June 24 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today reminded all parties not to drag the royal institution into political polemics, particularly in the run-up to elections.
He stressed that any differences in opinion or statements made by politicians should be addressed maturely without involving the royal institution.
“This is an election. Let those involved engage in politics. Do not drag the sacred institution of the Malay Rulers into it,” he said.
Anwar said this when met by reporters after attending a meet-and-greet session with civil servants, held together with Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, at the Public Works Department's Centre of Excellence for Engineering and Technology (CREaTE) here today.
He was commenting on remarks made by Amanah president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu during Pakatan Harapan's candidate announcement event in Johor on Monday, which some quarters alleged were directed at the royal institution.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh and Deputy Higher Education Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim also attended today’s event.
Also present were Public Service director-general Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz, Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah and Melaka State Secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad.
