KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 (Bernama) -- The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) futures contract on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives is likely to trade cautiously next week, tracking the local bourse and Wall Street’s performances, an analyst said.
Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng expects next week’s market attention to focus on several United States (US) key economic data, including gross domestic product (GDP) and jobless claims.
“The FBM KLCI is currently priced at about 12 times the calendar year 2025 price-to-earnings ratio, notably below its long-term average of over 16 times, indicating potential for further appreciation,” he told Bernama.
Meanwhile, UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd’s head of investment research, Mohd Sedek Jantan, said the benchmark index hovered near 1,500 points, where a breach of this level could trigger opportunistic buying by institutional investors, particularly as the index approaches its immediate support at 1,490 points.
“While the United States Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) guidance has introduced caution, markets may find support at lower levels, where valuation becomes more compelling.
“Geopolitical-driven volatility is often short-lived, and we expect a moderation in risk sentiment as these concerns subside,” he said.
On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the June 2025 contract went down by 16 points to 1,496.0, the July 2025 contract was 16.5 points weaker at 1,494.0, the September 2025 contract slid 17 points to 1,475.0, and the December 2025 contract fell 17.5 points to 1,480.0.
Weekly turnover advanced to 30,975 lots from 22,132 lots in the previous week, while open interest widened to 44,764 contracts from 40,297 contracts previously.
On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the barometer index dropped 15.37 points to 1,502.74 from 1,518.11 a week earlier.
