FRIM Earns 48th MBR Title With World’s First Dipterocarp Genome Publication

PETALING JAYA, July 12 (Bernama) -- The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) has secured its 48th Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) recognition with the world’s first published genome sequence of a Dipterocarp species, Rubroshorea leprosula (meranti tembaga).

The certificate for the record, titled "First to Publish the Genome Sequence of a Dipterocarp Species (Rubroshorea leprosula)", was presented by Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching to FRIM deputy director-general (Research) Dr Norwati Muhammad during the MBR Night of Achievers 2025 held last night.

Held once a decade, the MBR Night of Achievers honours Malaysians who have set exceptional records across various fields.

Also present were FRIM’s head of Genetics Laboratory Dr Kevin Ng Kit Seong, director of Forest Biotechnology Dr Lee Soon Leong, head of Biomolecular Research Lab Dr R.K. Getha, orchid specialist Ong Poh Teck, Corporate Communications head Toh An Nee, and FRIM media officer.

In a statement, FRIM said the publication of the Rubroshorea leprosula genome, one of Malaysia’s key Dipterocarp species, marks a major milestone in advancing tropical forest research, particularly in biotechnology and genomics.

“The study is expected to significantly impact biodiversity research, genetic resource conservation and more sustainable forest management strategies,” said FRIM.

The recognition also reflects FRIM’s commitment to advancing excellence in forestry research and natural sciences, while elevating the institution and Malaysia on the global stage.

Meanwhile, Kevin Ng said the study focused on identifying the genome of Rubroshorea leprosula, a valuable Malaysian hardwood species.

“We have the human genome and the oil palm genome. But we lacked genomic data for timber species. This effort by FRIM fills that gap,” he told Bernama.

He added that the study provides essential genetic information, such as disease and climate resistance, that can help improve the quality of local timber.

“As timber remains a key national commodity, FRIM is committed to generating knowledge that enhances its quality and long-term value,” he said.

Among FRIM’s previous MBR recognitions are the Largest Ex-situ Collection of Isolated Actinobacteria, First Malaysian Soil Scientist Appointed to the FAO’s Intergovernmental Technical Panel of Soils and Longest Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi Orchid Flower Stalk.
