Budget 2026: Works Ministry Seeks Higher Funding For Infrastructure Repairs -- Nanta

12/08/2025 05:14 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- The Works Ministry (KKR) is seeking a higher allocation in Budget 2026 to upgrade the nation’s main infrastructure, particularly major highways and federal roads.

Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the request is a core priority in the budget, which will be tabled in October.

“This has been a main request for years, based on our studies showing that the amount we receive is far below what is needed.

“We are seeking funds to repair and upgrade ageing and damaged roads across the country, not just federal routes,” he told reporters.

He was speaking after the ministry’s Budget 2026 Dialogue Session with 200 construction industry players at Kompleks Kerja Raya here today, also attended by KKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Azman Ibrahim.

Nanta was referring to the ministry’s plans to upgrade highways and repair damaged roads nationwide, including the East-West Highway (JRTB).

Today’s dialogue session was held to gather direct input and feedback from industry players to ensure the 2026 Budget is holistic and responsive to the construction sector’s needs.

In his speech, Nanta reaffirmed KKR’s commitment to strengthening the nation’s infrastructure in line with the government’s aspirations and the people’s needs.

He is scheduled to meet Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan on Aug 22 to discuss the ministry’s key proposals for the budget.
