Fahmi: Telecommunications Services In Merotai Restored, Backup Power Provided

TAWAU, Sept 7 (Bernama) -- Telecommunications services in Kampung Kuala Merotai, here, have been fully restored following disruptions caused by recent electricity supply issues.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that he personally inspected the JENDELA Tower in the village after receiving complaints from an elected representative and local residents submitted to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“Alhamdulillah, the issue has been resolved by the service provider, and telecommunications coverage has been fully restored. I would like to thank all parties who provided the information,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Fahmi said that to prevent similar disruptions in the future, service providers have been instructed to provide backup power, such as portable generators, and to increase battery capacity to supply electricity for up to eight hours.

The tower began operating on Sept 27, 2024, using the 4-Way Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) with service shared by CelcomDigi, Maxis, and U Mobile, and is managed by Redtone.

“Tests using the MCMC Nexus application found that this tower provides speeds of around 50Mbps for 4G services and benefits 1,200 residents,” he said.

Fahmi said this also demonstrates the MADANI Government’s ongoing efforts to ensure that the public continues to enjoy stable and high-quality telecommunications coverage.
