SEREMBAN, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- The Road Transport Department (JPJ) in Negeri Sembilan recorded 48 cases of driving on the emergency lanes in an operation carried out on the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway (PLUS Highway) over the weekend.

Its director, Hanif Yusabra Yusuf, said the two-day operation recorded 22 cases issued with summonses through Notice P22 and 26 cases for Notice 114 (investigation interview notice).

According to him, during this school holiday period, some road users were taking the easy way out by using the emergency lane to avoid congestion.

“The risk in doing so (using the emergency lane) will obstruct the movement of emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire engines, which may be delayed in arriving at critical locations. This could also result in accidents involving motorcyclists or damaged vehicles in the emergency lanes," he told reporters here today.

In the meantime, he said driver's behaviour was a contributing factor to the misuse of emergency lanes, with the driver taking the easy way out to avoid congestion and speed up the journey.

Hanif Yusabra said the mistake not only hindered the movement of rescue teams but also increased the risk of fatal accidents, and using the emergency lane without a valid reason is a serious offence under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
