Cloud Seeding Brings Rain, But Bukit Merah Dam Still At Critical Level

05/08/2025 05:38 PM

IPOH, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- The water level at the Bukit Merah Dam rose from 6.03 metres (m) to 6.096m as of this morning after a cloud-seeding operation produced rain in several areas yesterday.

The Perak Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) said in a statement that the dam's storage capacity also rose from 6.65 million cubic metres (12.2 per cent) to 7.25 million cubic metres (13.31 per cent).

However, it added that the dam's current status is still at the Water Supply Stop Level as stipulated under the existing standard operating procedure (SOP).

"The increased storage will, to a certain extent, help prolong the water supply period for domestic use, but water supply for irrigation purposes to the Kerian Irrigation Plan still cannot be restarted,” it added.

Yesterday, the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), in collaboration with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force, carried out cloud seeding in several areas affected by the hot weather, including over the Bukit Merah Dam, which has been experiencing critical water levels since June.
