ALOR GAJAH, April 9 -- Kolej Universiti Islam Melaka (KUIM), which was upgraded to a full university yesterday, is now known as Universiti Melaka or UniMEL.

Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad handed over the official letter of credentials for the upgrade to Executive Councillor in the Chief Minister’s Office (Education, Higher Education, Vocational and Technical, Science and Innovation), Datuk Noor Effandi Ahmad, representing Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.

Also present was UniMEL vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Taib Dora and the university’s top management line-up.

UniMEL, in a statement today, said its 26 years of experience in managing and administrating an institution of higher learning, made the university committed in upgrading to a university by stressing on digital technology in all study programmes.

According to the statement, the recognition would spur UniMEL to endeavour towards building human capital who were skilled in combining the existing fields of knowledge with the use of digital technology.

‘’UniMEL is also based on the concept of digital technological studies with the theme Digital Knowledge for the Development of Human Capital, focusing on Islamic enterpreneurs in line with T.E.R.A.S. (Technology, Entrepreneurship, Industrial Revolution and Economy, International, Prosperous) Melaka.

‘’Its main orientation is based on strategic university-industry-community collaborations of cross disciplines in ensuring sustainable development,’’ said the statement.

It said the university and the state government would also co-operate to boost the number of local and international students, subsequently helping to place it in the ranking of higher educational institutions worldwide and to simultaneously turn UniMEL into one of the premier educational institutions in Malaysia.

UniMEL, set up in 1994 and then known as Kolej Islam Melaka, is a higher education institution belonging fully to the Melaka government.

The university has a permanent campus, experienced teaching manpower and complete infrastructure making it on par with a full-fledged university.
