KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah congratulated the men’s indoor hockey squad for winning the Asia Cup in Bangkok, Thailand, yesterday.
Also congratulating the men’s indoor hockey squad on Istana Negara’s Facebook page was Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.
According to the Facebook posting: “The King and Queen were proud of the team’s achievement and wished the squad will continue to excel in the sport and make the country proud.”
Malaysian hockey achieved a historic moment when the men’s squad beat defending champions Iran 3-2 during a shootout (full time 4-4) to clinch the Men’s Hockey Indoor Asia Cup in Bangkok for the first time.
The win also ended Iran’s dominance in the championship since the country had won every tournament held since 2008.
Malaysia for one, had lost four previous finals to Iran, losing in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2014.
