ISKANDAR PUTERI, Dec 5  (Bernama) -- A total of 15,843 self-employed individuals (OBS) involved in the gig economy in Johor registered and contributed to the self-employed social security scheme (SKSPS) from January to October this year, the state assembly (DUN) was told.

Chairman of the Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur Development, Cooperatives and Human Resources Committee Mohd Hairi Mad Shah said of that number, e-hailing has the highest number of contributors with 8,281. The p-hailing segment, which distributes food and goods, recorded 7,236 contributors while 326 gig workers are from other sectors.

“The involvement of the OBS has contributed to the country’s revenue and helped to reduce unemployment and raise the income of individuals.

“The state government via SOCSO always strives to enhance the social security programme for gig workers in the state,” he told the state assembly in Kota Iskandar here today.

“The federal government through financial institutions can also help gig workers through new ways such as identifying score credits to enable them to get micro credit financing,” Mohd Hairi added.
