KUCHING, April 26 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF) will organise a Gawai Dayak Open House from June 9-11 at the Matop Longhouse in Betong division.
Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, Datuk Gerald Jabu said Matop Longhouse was chosen because it still maintains the original structure built in 1941 that used belian wood.
"During the event, guests will be given a traditional welcome by the community, led by the Tuai Rumah (headman) Anyie Rajit in the illustrious history of Rumah Matop.
“This will be followed by the traditional ritual of Miring, as well as a ngajat dance performance. Visitors can also expect to taste traditional Iban food and drinks, including the famous ‘tuak’, chicken pansuh, pulut, barbeque meat and many more,” he said in a press conference here today.
There will also be a Gawai parade in Betong town with the local community and an exhibition of local community handicraft and artwork.
Meanwhile, STF president Audry Wan Ullok said the open house is aimed at promoting cultural diversity and showcasing traditions and customs unique to Sarawak.
“This will be the second year we are organising a Gawai Open House, after the first one in Kampung Taee, which is a Bidayuh village,” he said.
