PARIS, Aug 4 (Bernama-dpa) -- Ukraine won their first gold medal at the Paris Olympics on Saturday, in women's sabre team fencing.

Led by Olga Kharlan, who won an individual bronze and Ukraine's first medal in Paris on Monday, the Ukrainians defeated South Korea 45-42, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

The Ukrainian team trailed throughout the entire bout, but Kharlan helped secure the victory by scoring 22 total touches in the final.

Bronze went to Japan after they defeated hosts France 45-40.

“We still don’t believe that we’ve made it. I’d like to thank Ukraine for their huge support there and here," Kharlan said.

Ukraine is now the first country to win women's team sabre twice, having previously claimed gold when the event debuted in Beijing. Kharlan was also on that team.

For Kharlan, 33, it was her sixth Olympic medal and her second gold, having also won the team event in 2008.

She dedicated the win to "our heroes who right now defend us from Russia and to the athletes who never will compete in the Olympics because they were killed by Russians."

The Ukrainians are competing at the Paris Olympics amid the ongoing Russian invasion.
