KOTA KINABALU, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Sabah Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin reminded the state's athletes participating in the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Sarawak to be disciplined and protect the good name of the state.

Ellron also wants all Sabah athletes to give their best performance to contribute medals to the state contingent in every event that will take place from Aug 17-24.

“We expect strong discipline among the athletes. Live up to Sabah's good name. Let's not create problems there. Do your best for Sabah and don't let your hard training go to waste,” he said at a press conference on National Sports Day (HSN) celebrated in the here today.

Also present was Sabah Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Fairuz Renddan.

“Watch what you eat and drink, rest and take care of yourself," he said, adding that Sabah athletes were reminded not to be over-confident even though they made preliminary preparations.

Ellron said two groups of athletes are now in Kuching, Sarawak to undergo training and adapt to the venues of their respective events, while his group is scheduled to leave for the Land of the Hornbills this Friday.

Commenting on HSN at the Sabah level, Ellron said that the programme to be held on Oct 12 at the Keningau Sports Complex aims, among other things, to increase community involvement in sports activities and raise awareness on the importance of sports to create a fit and active society.

He said more than 500,000 participants are expected to enliven HSN throughout the state starting at 7 am, focusing on participation from various levels of society starting from children to the elderly.

Ellron said various interesting activities were held such as the exhibition of products related to sports science as a platform to increase the public’s understanding of the importance of sports, in addition to several other iconic programmes like aerobics, running for the country, MADANI fun walk and traditional sports.

“Traditional sports are not only held during the Kaamatan Festival, but also on HSN because it is necessary for young children to know what traditional sports are, so we need to hold them so that they are not lost in time,” he said.
