BANGKOK, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Thailand’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has pledged to continue the government policies of her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, with a focus on economic reforms and healthcare improvements aimed at enhancing the lives of the people.

The 37-year-old Paetongtarn vowed to work closely with all sectors to ensure that all initiatives become reality.

“I’m dedicated to pushing forward key policies, including economic reforms, the 30-baht healthcare improvements, enhancing digital infrastructure, and promoting Thailand’s Soft Power on the global stage.

“Please look forward to more concrete policy details in early September," she said in her first press conference as prime minister.

She expressed her gratitude to Srettha, noting that during his 11-months tenure, he accomplished many positive initiatives that can be continued.

Paetongtarn, the youngest daughter of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, received King Vajiralongkorn’s written royal command at a ceremony held at the Pheu Thai headquarters on Sunday morning, two days after being elected by Parliament.

Paetongtarn said she is fully prepared and determined to embrace her new role as Prime Minister.

“Initially, I didn't plan to take on this role, but I want to assure everyone that I am fully prepared and determined.

“The role of prime minister carries immense responsibility, and I am focused on addressing the pressing issues facing the country, particularly improving the lives of Thai citizens.

"I promise to serve everyone equally, and wholeheartedly. Regardless of age, gender, or diversity, together let’s turn any challenges into opportunities, making Thailand a place where everyone can dream, create, and shape their future," she said.

In the remaining three years of this Parliament’s term, Paetongtarn stated that she will work with the legislative branch with an open heart and listen to all opinions to jointly advance the country.

"This great task cannot be achieved by working alone. I am determined to synergise the power and potential of all generations and talents from all walks of life and sectors, including the Cabinet, coalition parties, civil servants, and all Thai people," she said.

Meanwhile, when asked about how much she would rely on her father Thaksin for advice, Paetongtarn said she hopes to seek his guidance when needed, but not constantly.

“I’m my own person with my own goals to achieve in the future, but I will certainly consider all his comments,” she said.

Paetongtarn is the kingdom’s youngest prime minister, succeeding Srettha, who was removed from office by the Constitutional Court on Wednesday (Aug 14).

The political neophyte is the kingdom’s second female prime minister and the third Shinawatra to hold the top job, following her father, Thaksin, and her aunt, Yingluck.
