SINGAPORE, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has congratulated Paetongtarn Shinawatra on becoming Thailand’s new prime minister on Sunday.

Wong said he is confident that the friendship between Singapore and Thailand will continue to flourish in the years ahead.

“Congratulations to Paetongtarn Shinawatra on becoming the prime minister of Thailand. SG (Singapore) & Thailand share longstanding & multi-faceted relations — built by generations of leaders over the years,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Singapore and Thailand, which established diplomatic ties on Sept 20, 1965, will celebrate the 60th anniversary of their relations next year.

Paetongtarn, 37, was endorsed as Thailand’s prime minister by King Maha Vajiralongkorn on Sunday, two days after being elected by the Parliament. She is the kingdom’s youngest prime minister.

She succeeds Srettha Thavisin, who was removed from office by the Constitutional Court on Wednesday (Aug 14).
