BANGKOK, Aug 19 (Bernama-VNA) -- Thailand’s tourism industry expects the new direct flight route between Kuala Lumpur and Chiang Mai to help the country attract more than 5 million Malaysian visitors this year.

Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported the inaugural Malaysia Airlines flight, MH772, took off from Kuala Lumpur on Aug 15, marking the start of five weekly services on the route with a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with a capacity of 297 passengers.

Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Thapanee Kiatphaibool expressed her enthusiasm for the new route, emphasising that the direct link between two major Southeast Asian cities will significantly enhance travel convenience for Malaysian tourists.

She said that opening new direct flight routes is part of TAT's strategy to expand the quality tourist market by collaborating with airline networks, to position Thailand as a hub for ASEAN tourism.

Thapanee said that TAT is keen to capitalise on the growing Malaysian market, which is known for its high spending power and repeat visits.

According to Thai authorities, 80 per cent of Malaysian tourists to Thailand are independent travellers, with 69 per cent returning for multiple visits.

Their popular activities include experiencing Thai cuisine, indulging in spa treatments, exploring historical sites, and enjoying beach holidays.

Thailand has welcomed more than 3 million Malaysian tourists this year, up 27.65 per cent over the same period in 2023.

TAT said it remains committed to further boosting visitor numbers through targeted marketing campaigns and by working closely with industry partners.
