KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 (Bernama) -- A total of 3,154 new students have registered at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) for their fulltime bachelor’s degrees for the 2024/2025 academic session that begins today.

UTM deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Dr Ali Selamat said in a statement today that 2,977 students registered at the UTM Johor Bahru campus in Johor and 117 students at the UTM Kuala Lumpur campus.

“The students will be taking their bachelor’s degree programmes at 12 faculties including the Artificial Intelligence Faculty (FAI),” he said, adding that the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying recorded the highest number of new students at 503, followed by the Electrical Engineering Faculty (357 students) and the Science Faculty (343 students).

He said the newly set up FAI will receive 101 students as its first batch today and they will be taking their three-year Bachelor’s in Artificial Intelligence with Honours degree programme at UTM Kuala Lumpur.

Also, a total of 986 international students from 37 countries will be studying in UTM for this academic session, with China recording the most students at 497, followed by Sudan (140 students) and Indonesia (84 students).

Ali shared that Johor athlete Muhammad Azriq Haszely, who won a silver medal at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), has registered as a new student, along with four of other Johor SUKMA contingent members.

He also touched on increasing the efficiency and simplifying the registration process for new students, pointing out that UTM has implemented the e-Dafter and e-Hostel modules for the first time via the UTMSmart app.

“Students who receive the offer to study at the university can pre-register online. The process involves sending important student documents for early registration, matrix card applications and the selection of hostel dormitories are also done with this system.

“The registration time today has been shortened as students already know their respective hostel dormitories via the system, through scanning a QR code on the UTMSmart app,” he said.

Ali also said that UTM would craft a special programme for B40 students and also students with disabilities to receive assistance, guidance and monitoring.

“New students will undergo their orientation week from Sept 28 to 30 to allow them to get comfortable with UTM campus life,” he added.
