Sufficient Food Supplies in Penang For Northeast Monsoon Period

GEORGE TOWN, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- The Penang government has given an assurance of sufficient food supplies from the fisheries, agriculture and farming sectors throughout the coming Northeast Monsoon (MTL) season.

State Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol said that, so far, food resources have not been affected and that all the relevant agencies and departments are on standby to ensure there is sufficient food supply throughout the monsoon season.

"From the information and statistics I received from the relevant departments, I find the food supply from the fishery, agriculture and farming sectors to be sufficient for the people of Penang,” he told a media conference on the Penang State Mutiara MADANI Cooperatives Grant and Penang Jelajah Tani 2024 programme here today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) expects the MTL to occur early next month based on the climate factors With Malaysia still in the monsoon transition phase, which began on Sept 24, the state is also expected to be hit by floods.

Earlier, at the media conference, Fahmi said a total of RM200,000 Mutiara MADANI Grants were disbursed through the Penang branch of the Cooperative Commission of Malaysia (SKM) to assist the cooperative movement in the state.

"My committee, in collaboration with Penang SKM and the Penang State Education Department, will hold three seminars on ‘Young Coop Business Camp’ on Oct 27, Oct 28 and Nov 23 to assist the cooperative movement at the school level to focus on the youth, particularly school students,” he said. 

He added that they will also organise the Jelajah Tani 2024 Programme in Teluk Air Tawar in the Seberang Perai Utara District on Oct 27; Pulau Betong in the Barat Daya District on Nov 10; and Permatang Pauh in the Seberang Perai Tengah District on Nov 30.
