No Pressing Need To Amend Federal Capital Act 1960 - MBWP

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- The Federal Territories Youth Council (MBWP) believes that there is no pressing need to amend the Federal Capital Act 1960.

In a statement today, MBWP noted that the leadership of the Federal Territories Department and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) should be given the space to carry out the ongoing institutional reforms for the benefit of the capital's residents.

"If necessary, any amendments involving the act should be carefully considered by all stakeholders, focusing on policy gaps and key areas that guide the development of over 500,000 youths in Kuala Lumpur.

"MBWP is aware of the calls from several parties to amend the Federal Capital Act 1960 to allow for the appointment of councillors in the administration of DBKL," the statement said.

MBWP expressed full confidence in the efforts and initiatives led by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif.

This, the council said,  includes initiatives aimed at improving the efficiency of Kuala Lumpur's city management as the nation's progressive capital, with a community-based development approach and a focus on sustainability.

Earlier, DAP Vice President Teresa Kok in a press conference after the 2024 Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur DAP Ordinary Convention had proposed that the act be amended to allow for the appointment of councillors, as is done by local authorities across the country.

Additionally, MBWP expressed appreciation for DBKL’s swift and efficient response in addressing the recent flash floods in Kuala Lumpur.

According to MBWP, DBKL's effective implementation of mitigation measures, including drainage system maintenance and the immediate activation of emergency response teams, helped reduce the impact of the floods.

"MBWP is also ready to fully cooperate with all parties, including government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and local communities, in efforts to address the risks of natural disasters during the monsoon season.

"MBWP is committed to playing an active role in raising public awareness and assisting in coordinating emergency relief efforts," the statement added.
