Tourists Disappointed As Kinabatangan River Exploration Halted By Floods

05/02/2025 10:59 PM

KINABATANGAN, Feb 5 (Bernama) -- Flooding in several areas of this district has forced the temporary suspension of tourism activities, particularly along the Kinabatangan River.

Spanish tourist Beatriz Velasco Monasterio said she and her friend had been in Sabah for three weeks for tourism purposes and arrived in Sukau yesterday. However, their plans were disrupted by the floods.

She said that they came to Kinabatangan to experience a cruise along the Kinabatangan River, often referred to as the Sabah’s Amazon, due to its incredible biodiversity with orangutans, crocodiles, Borneo pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys and various bird species.

“We were supposed to go on a night river cruise and jungle trekking, but sadly, that cannot be done. We will be here until tomorrow, and we plan to revisit this place,” she told Bernama.

Beatriz added that the recent flooding in Kinabatangan reminded her of the flood that occurred three months ago in Spain, which claimed over 200 lives.

Meanwhile, New Zealand tourist Seren Setev described witnessing the floods in Sukau as a first-time experience.

“I had never seen a flood before. Some houses near the river are submerged, and we missed the chance to see elephants by the river as they moved to higher ground instead,” she said.

She added that she and her friend had planned to explore the Kinabatangan River but could not proceed.

Meanwhile, Kinabatangan Civil Defence Force (APM) officer Mohd Masdi Masran urged residents and visitors to follow safety instructions and stay updated on the latest information about the flooding situation in Kinabatangan.

“River water levels have been rising due to continuous rain and the latest forecast indicates more rainfall from Feb 4 to 7. We advise everyone to stay cautious and ensure that the food provided is clean,” he said.

In addition to monitoring the flooding and evacuating victims, he said that APM was also distributing food baskets to flood victims in the district.
