JAKARTA, Feb 10 (Bernama) -- A speedboat carrying 30 passengers capsized in Bulungan, North Kalimantan, on Monday, killing three people and leaving four others missing, local authorities said.
The accident occurred on the Temangga river at around 1.30 pm local time after the vessel reportedly struck a large piece of driftwood and sank.
North Kalimantan police chief Inspector General Hary Sudwijanto said search and rescue operations were underway, with all available resources deployed to locate and evacuate the missing passengers.
“We’re maximising search efforts along the Kayan River. A joint team has been sent to several strategic locations to speed up the process. Our top priority is to rescue the missing victims,” he said in a statement.
According to Tarakan Search and Rescue Office, the speedboat had departed from Pulau Tias in Tanjung Palas Tengah and was heading to Tanjung Selor after passengers attended a wedding ceremony.
Survivors, including those needing medical treatment, were taken to a hospital in Tanjung Selor after being rescued by a nearby speedboat and rescuers, said its head of operations, Didik Hariana.
