SINGAPORE, Feb 12 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Association in Singapore (MASIS) aims to increase its membership numbers this year to build a stronger and more diverse network of Malaysians in the city-state, said its new president Suen Bohn.
She said the association, established in 2014, has been the pillar of support for over 1,000 active members living, working, and studying in Singapore.
“MASIS is a multiracial, multicultural, non-political, and non-profit organisation that serves as a platform for the community of Malaysians and people of Malaysian origin to support and connect with one another.
“As president of MASIS for this term, I am committed to reach out to more Malaysians in Singapore, to foster new opportunities of collaboration with corporates and other associations, and to create meaningful experience for our members,” she told Bernama at MASIS’ Chinese New Year celebration here, recently.
Bohn from Penang, was elected to lead the association at its Annual General Meeting in December 2024 for a two-year term until December 2026.
She added that the association, together with corporate partners, has lined up various activities in conjunction with the Malaysia-Singapore 60th anniversary of bilateral relations this year, such as a photography contest and film festivals.
MASIS also organises a wide range of activities throughout the year, including networking mixers, sports and games, investment seminars, beach clean-ups, yoga wellness, culinary gatherings, charity initiatives, arts and culture showcases, and career talks.
Last year, the association formalised the MASIS Student Inter-Varsity Council (MASIV) to engage and support the younger generation of Malaysians studying in universities in Singapore. It also launched the inaugural collaboration with the Singapore Police Force to increase awareness of anti-scam initiatives.
Bohn said apart from discounts and perks, members get to engage with other Malaysians in Singapore to share and receive knowledge, expand their networks, gain access to valuable resources and support, and form lasting friendships.
Meanwhile, MASIS’ Chinese New Year celebration at a hotel here last week was attended by Deputy High Commissioner of Malaysia to Singapore Ismail Mohamad Bkri, Counsellor at the Malaysia High Commission in Singapore Syuhada Adnan, and Minister (Economic) at the Malaysia High Commission in Singapore Kavitha Mathuvay.
Malaysia's world number two tower runner Soh Wai Ching also attended the event, where he shared his story and insights on the sport.
