ALOR SETAR, March 4 ( Bernama) -- The Kedah State Zakat Board (LZNK), with the consent of the Kedah Sultan, Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, has set two zakat fitrah rates at RM7 and RM14, said its chairman Datuk Seri Norizan Khazali.
According to him, the rates were determined based on the grade and type of rice commonly consumed by Muslims in Kedah, measured at one Baghdad gantang (equivalent to 2.6kg).
“If a person regularly consumes local rice but has the means to pay more…they are encouraged to pay zakat fitrah at a higher rate,” he told reporters at Menara Zakat LZNK, here today.
Norizan, also the state secretary, said LZNK aims to collect RM14.5 million of zakat fitrah this year compared to RM13.31 million last year.
He encouraged Muslims in the state to pay zakat fitrah online through its website JomZakat at jom.zakatkedah.com.my, zakatfitrah.com.my or via the Zakat On Touch mobile app.
He said payments could also be made to 2,753 amil (zakat collectors) and 172 agencies it appointed across the state.
