KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 (Bernama) -- Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) is equipping families of the Malaysian Armed Forces with digital business skills to improve income opportunities through its ‘Empowering Digital Business’ programme with the Armed Forces Family Welfare Body (BAKAT).
In a statement today, UPTM said the programme, held at Kem Sungai Besi, involved 150 participants from BAKAT, particularly those from the B40 group.
Participants were exposed to digital marketing strategies, brand development and financial management to enhance their income-generating capabilities and improve their standard of living through the digital economy.
They also participated in interactive sessions focusing on the use of digital platforms, such as TikTok, Instagram, Telegram, and WhatsApp Business, as well as hands-on activities that allowed them to directly apply marketing techniques to generate income in a more structured manner.
The programme also emphasised financial literacy, including bookkeeping, profit and loss calculations, as well as an understanding of tax responsibilities and reliefs, to produce entrepreneurs who are not only creative but also financially competent.
Meanwhile, UPTM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Sharifah Syahirah Syed Sheikh said the initiative provides broader opportunities for BAKAT families to venture into digital entrepreneurship while strengthening their ability to manage household finances effectively.
“Synergy between educational institutions and the community can generate significant economic impact and support the nation’s digital economy development,” she said.
A total of 656 students and lecturers from UPTM’s Faculty of Business and Accounting were also involved in organising the programme, including 25 interactive exhibitions focusing on digital marketing, accounting advisory services and business innovation.
The programme was supported by brands such as Farm Fresh, Hausboom, F&N, Nestlé and Dino Monster, contributing to the overall quality of its implementation.
UPTM said it plans to continue the initiative through a series of follow-up programmes and mentoring sessions, in line with the goals of SULAM (Service-Learning Malaysia – University for Society), which emphasises the sustainability of long-term, high-impact programmes.
