PUTRAJAYA, April 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Austria have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation across key sectors, particularly in trade and investment, renewable energy, green technology, education, and tourism.
In a statement on Thursday, the Foreign Ministry said the matter was conveyed during a meeting between Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni and the State Secretary at Austria’s European and International Affairs Ministry, Sepp Schellhorn.
“The discussion also covered current regional and international developments of mutual interest including Malaysia–European Union relations and the situation in West Asia,” the statement read.
According to the statement, Austria views Malaysia as an important partner in Southeast Asia and a valued counterpart in advancing stronger ASEAN–European Union engagement.
“Austria also recognised Malaysia’s strategic location, dynamic economy, as well as its role as a regional hub for trade and investment, making it a natural partner for deeper cooperation in the region,” it said.
In 2025, Austria was Malaysia’s eighth largest trading partner among European Union countries.
Total trade increased by 43.3 per cent, reaching RM6.35 billion (US$1.49 billion), compared with RM4.43 billion (US$0.97 billion) recorded in 2024.
As of 2025, a total of 27 projects with Austrian participation were approved, amounting to RM49.6 billion (US$11.5 billion) in investments and with the potential to create 11,165 jobs.
