Demand For Used Electric Vehicles In Germany Spikes In 2026 - Reports

MOSCOW, June 2 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- Demand for used electric vehicles (EVs) in Germany rose significantly in 2026 due to rising fuel prices, caused by the West Asia conflict, Sputnik/RIA Novosti reported.

Der Spiegel magazine reported, citing the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), that nearly 120,000 used electric vehicles were sold nationwide in the first four months of 2026.

The figure is almost double the number sold in the same period in 2025 and almost triple the number sold in the first four months of 2024, the report said on Monday.

In addition, the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) found that the share of electric vehicles among all used cars registered in Germany increased from three per cent to 7.7 per cent between April 2025 and April 2026. This increase was particularly noticeable at the onset of the West Asia conflict, when fuel prices soared, the report noted.

On February 28, the United States (US) and Israel launched strikes on targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran responded by striking Israeli territory and US military facilities in West Asia.

On April 7, Washington and Tehran announced a ceasefire. Subsequent talks held in Islamabad ended without a breakthrough.

The escalation surrounding Iran has led to the de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for oil and liquefied natural gas supplies from the Persian Gulf to global markets, and has also impacted oil exports and production. Due to the blockage, most countries around the world are seeing rising prices for fuel and industrial products.
