KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 (Bernama) -- A group of Malaysians are set to challenge some of the world's best endurance athletes at the upcoming HYROX World Championships in Sweden and Challenge Roth triathlon in Germany.
The Malaysian contingent includes several athletes aged above 60, led by the eldest representative Tan Ay Bing, 69, who will compete at the HYROX World Championships in Strawberry Arena, Stockholm from June 18 to 21, proving that age is no barrier to competition.
Other HYROX participants are Terence Poon Chau Chun, 64, Lee Ho Kiat, 36, Kyle See and Mandy Chai, both aged 25, as well as sisters Dr Yeap Jing Eng, 65, Yeap Jing Ching, 62, and Yeap Jing Nee, 59.
Meanwhile, KL Wellness City (KLWC) Executive Director Datuk Seri Dr Vincent Tiew, 50, and Ng Choon Keith, 42, will compete at Challenge Roth in Bavaria, Germany on July 5, widely regarded as one of the most prestigious long-distance triathlon events in the world.
All 10 athletes, representing the Team KLWC, were honoured at a send-off ceremony here today officiated by Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Mordi Bimol.
Vincent said the majority of the participants are above 50, who have significant commitment, discipline and perseverance required for endurance sports.
“As I prepare for Challenge Roth, Challenge Malaysia and Ironman Langkawi later this year, I am inspired by the dedication shown by our fellow athletes who have earned the opportunity to represent Malaysia on the world stage. We are proud to support them on this journey.
“We wish Team KLWC every success in Stockholm and Roth, and we look forward to seeing them inspire more Malaysians to pursue healthier, more active lifestyles, and I'm hoping to achieve my 20th full long-distance triathlon completion, be it Ironman or Challenge,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mordi said the athletes' participation demonstrates the growing culture of health, fitness and active living among Malaysians.
“It is truly inspiring to see Malaysian athletes stepping onto the world stage with such determination and passion. Their commitment to excellence reflects the spirit of Malaysia MADANI, where resilience, discipline and unity drive us forward.
“I commend KLWC for its role in nurturing a strong wellness and sports ecosystem that encourages Malaysians to embrace active and healthy lifestyles. We wish all our athletes the very best as they carry our national flag proudly in Stockholm and Roth,” he said while officiating the event.
The HYROX World Championships is the season finale that brings together the top 0.5 per cent of HYROX athletes worldwide.
The competition combines eight one-kilometre runs with eight functional fitness stations, including SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls. Athletes compete across Singles, Doubles and Relay divisions, with more than US$300,000 in prize money on offer.
Challenge Roth race comprises a 3.8-kilometre swim, a 180-kilometre cycling leg and a full marathon run of 42.2 kilometres, attracting elite triathletes and amateur competitors from around the world. Renowned for its electric atmosphere, the event draws hundreds of thousands of spectators annually.
