Unity Needs Socioeconomic Justice And Fair Regional Development – Hajiji

13/06/2026 06:40 PM

KOTA KINABALU, June 13 (Bernama) -- True unity can no longer be measured merely by courtesy or tolerance, but must be translated into tangible action, socioeconomic justice, and equitable development for every territory, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said.

He said genuine unity demands continuous commitment, sincere mutual respect, and a guarantee that every state and area receives fair treatment and development opportunities.

"I want to invite all of us to delve into and re-evaluate the meaning of unity as we prepare to face a more challenging future," he said.

He said this during his speech at the 2026 National Unity Week celebration, which was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Likas Sports Complex here today.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

Hajiji said choosing Sabah to host the celebration was a great honour for the state and a recognition of its people's culture, which has long embraced harmony and togetherness as a way of life.

He said the ability of Sabah’s people, comprising various ethnicities, cultures, languages, and beliefs, to live together in peace and mutual respect proves that unity is not just a slogan but a long-standing practice.

"The Sabah state government remains committed to ensuring that unity and harmony continue to serve as the foundation for the state's development.

"We also embrace the Malaysia MADANI aspirations that prioritise well-being, compassion, mutual respect, and sustainability in national development as the foundation for strong unity and shared prosperity," he said.

Hajiji also urged the people of Sabah to continue preserving harmony, appreciating racial and religious diversity, and strengthening the spirit of goodwill that defines the state's unique identity while avoiding any elements that could threaten unity.
