KOTA KINABALU, June 13 (Bernama) -- Media practitioners must continue to uphold the accuracy and authenticity of facts, even though the world of journalism is currently facing rapid changes driven by digital revolution, social media and artificial intelligence (AI), said Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
He said digital transformation has opened up great opportunities for the media industry, including through the emergence of new platforms for news delivery, in addition to the use of AI to assist journalists in their routine tasks.
However, he said these developments have also brought major challenges to the world of journalism, particularly in ensuring that information delivered to the public remains accurate, authentic and presented with integrity.
“On one hand, this digital transformation brings extraordinary opportunities. New platforms for news delivery and AI to assist journalists in their routine tasks.
“On the other hand, it also presents major challenges. Although speed is a priority in news reporting, the accuracy and authenticity of facts cannot be compromised,” he said.
The text of his speech was read out by the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, at the Kinabalu Press Awards (KPA) here tonight.
Hajiji said media practitioners must continue to carry out their duties with full integrity based on the principles of professional and responsible journalism.
He added that the media plays a crucial role in national development, where feature articles and analyses produced by journalists help to broaden public understanding and encourage critical thinking among the community.
He called on media practitioners to continue serving as a bridge between government policies and the people so that every policy decision and government direction can be conveyed clearly to all levels of society.
“I have personally seen from up close how media practitioners work tirelessly, put in extra hours, pursue news from various angles and ensure that every report delivered is accurate and produced with integrity for the benefit of the people,” he said.
He hopes that the KPA will act as a catalyst for media practitioners to continue producing high-quality journalistic work that benefits the public as a whole.
