AT LEAST FIVE KILLED, 30 INJURED IN TRAIN COLLISION IN INDIA

NEW DELHI, June 17 (Bernama) -- At least five people were reported killed and 30 injured in a train collision in India's West Bengal state on Monday.

Two rear compartments of the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express derailed after a goods train rammed into it near the New Jalpaiguri station, local media reported.

"Shocked to learn, just now, about a tragic train accident, in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district," West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said.

She said local officials, doctors, ambulances and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue and medical assistance.

"Rescue operations going on at war footing. Railways, NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) are working in close coordination. Injured are being shifted to the hospital. Senior officials have reached site," Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a social media post.
