MELAKA, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- Centre on Integrated Rural Development For Asia dan the Pacific (CIRDAP) countries can explore opportunities in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes which hold significant potential for advancing skills development, fostering regional cooperation and promoting sustainable agriculture and rural development.

Rural and Regional Development Deputy Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang said by leveraging the strengths and resources, Malaysia and CIRDAP countries can strengthen collaboration in TVET programmes to promote skills development, economic growth and social inclusion in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Apart from TVET, the exploration of new technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) is crucial for CIRDAP member countries to address emerging challenges in rural development.

“These include the utilisation of rapid technological advancements, climate change impacts and unforeseen disasters,” she said at the opening of the 39th Technical Committee CIRDAP Meeting here today.

Rubiah said providing Digital Literacy Programs to rural communities is also important to ensure that rural residents can effectively access and utilise new technologies.

The deputy minister said these initiatives empower rural populations to engage in e-commerce, access vital information and improve their livelihoods, ultimately contributing to poverty reduction.

“In this regard, regional cooperation plays a critical role in sharing successful models and establishing networks that connect rural entrepreneurs across borders, thereby enhancing their capabilities and expanding their reach.

"Prioritising investments in training programmes, increasing the visibility of initiatives and fostering collaboration with other international organisations are essential to address the unique needs of rural communities.

“It should encompass agricultural skills, digital technology expertise, renewable energy and other emerging sectors,” she said.
