KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 (Bernama) -- The Sup Kawah Hitam Restaurant, launched today, will not only support Buku Jalanan Chow Kit's (BJCK) free education initiative but also provide employment opportunities for the local community.

The restaurant, which will be operated by BJCK, was opened to increase the income of the non-governmental organisation (NGO), which is continuing the free education initiative for marginalised children with the help of Sadaqa House Bank Islam.

Bank Islam Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Muazzam Mohamed said Sadaqa House continues to be committed to helping marginalised children gain access to education and expects over 100 children, BJCK staff, and the local community to benefit from the restaurant's opening.

"Sup Kawah Hitam Restaurant is not just a place to eat but also provides job opportunities for the local community, thus reflecting Sadaqa House's commitment to empowering the community for a better future.

"The launch of this restaurant is expected to ensure that the BJCK learning centre continues to operate and provide benefits to marginalised children in the surrounding area," he said when met at the restaurant’s opening ceremony here, today.

Since 2019, BJCK has received social funds exceeding RM600,000 from Sadaqa House.

Mohd Muazzam said Sadaqa House had also increased its support for BJCK by financing the building rent, which amounted to RM150,000 a year.

Meanwhile, BJCK Executive Director Amin Khalili said the restaurant's opening was a positive step toward empowering the local community.

"We see this restaurant as a positive step to help the community in Lorong Haji Taib, which is often associated with various stigmas. Through this restaurant, we not only provide food at a reasonable price but also offer job opportunities to residents.

"We hope that this business can thrive, further opening up more job opportunities for local residents as well as students who have completed their studies here," he said.

According to Amin, since its establishment in 2015, BJCK has provided education for marginalised children in Chow Kit, including homeschooling programmes, evening classes on weekends, BJCK Football Club, and the #KolektifAnakChowKit programme to hone their talents and creativity.
